Did anybody say "the world gonna end" at the given date of Mayan Calendar above?

The Calendar does not run "out of page" at 2012. And it's not the same thing as beginning with "January 1" after "December 31". Mayans used a combination of different calendars for regular use, like yearly Haab or semi-religious Tzolkin. The 13 Baktun date of the Long Count is a completely different thing; it marks the last day of a 5125.36 year cycle, of which we don't have much clue yet. For Mayans, that was not "the end of the world" but the end of a "World Age" they called The Fifth Sun.

For Mayans, that was not "the end of the world" but the end of a "World Age" they called The Fifth Sun.

Since they had the heritage of a complicated and a very accurate astronomical records and calculation methods, the 13 Baktuns period was most probably related to a celestial cycle, very likely an interpolation of different orbital periods of bodies in our galaxy.

They mention of a catastrophical transformation at the end of the Fourth Sun just before the Fifth (current one) began. According to our calendars, it's 32nd century BCE when a series of floods and climate-related changes took over many parts of the world, including but not limited to Mesopotamia, Harappa, Egypt. The beginning date of the Fifth Sun, in August 3114 BCE, coincides with the beginnings of the first known big kingdoms (Egyptian, Sumerian, Minoan, Harappan to name but a few) after the long and relatively very peaceful neolithic period.

So, how about the new "world age", The Sixth Sun, that's supposed to begin in the last days of the year 2012? Will it come after a chain of disasters that would shake the world? I'd be cautious before disdaining the Mayans astronomical lore and calendar wisdom.
