AtlLiberal says: Intolerance, hate, prejudice. Still alive and very active in large portions of the US. Incidents like this remind us to never become complacent and assume that actions like this are rare or isolated. Almost 8,000 hate crimes in 2006. And according to the Southern Poverty Law Center they are on the rise. What can be done with these nuts? There needs to be a way to profile these people before they act so that we can prevent it form happening. I really don't believe profiling would be advisable. How much private information would you be willing to be made public? Therein lies the problem. We live in a free society and most folks rebel against invasions of their privacy. I'm continually receiving privacy notices from banks, credit card companies, insurance companies and the like. On the other hand, our government strives to invade our privacy in the spirit of national security. IMO, much of the government snooping is as much concerned with gathering information about political enemies as it is in gathering information about "terrorists". A realistic assessment of the dangers and an appropriate response is called for. I'm not ready ... That is just it, in reality, there is no privacy. Every time we go online, you use your credit card, use your debit card, etc. you are being tracked. There are companies that track everything we do. There is no such thing as privacy. This is slightly off topic but I recently read a whodunit entitled "The Broken Window: A Lincoln Rhyme Novel". Deals with a psychopath who uses data mining to target his prey. Pretty spooky. |
