Ali, a .tar is a Tape ARchive file (I think individual files are concatenated into a single file to produce a smaller overall file size) - the .gz reference relates to a (typically) package of files combined using the tar utility which are then 'zipped' up/compressed using gzip e.g. firefox_1_2.2.tar.gz
