Terrible. Isn't that the Shamyat law or something? I was told that even in the UAE, the police could stop and/or arrest anyone (woman) who was in a vehicle who wasn't her husband or related to her...I don't know if it's true or not.

There are a lot of families here in the UAE that resort to sharing accomodation with others due to the extremely high rents. I heard recently that the powers that be intend to create trouble members of the opposite gender who aren't related to each other but are living in the same house....

I would say I'm surprised... but I recall twelve years ago hearing about ten year old girls being killed for not wearing scarves to school in Morocco.

Sort of reminds me of the injustice meted out to a rape victim in Pakistan just a few years ago. I forget most of the details at the moment, but I remember that the young woman was gang-raped because of some minor infraction or something her young brother had done.
