Ha ha ha.... when I read it, I was thinking it wasn't really a family pub to be taking the kids... I went a few years ago and saw some guy with swastika's tattooed on his neck smashing one of his boots over another guys head.

I must admit I find synths impenetrable - too many buttons

Well, they are and they aren't... I got really confused by mine, which only has 5 dials and 6 buttons to manipulate sounds with.
You start with a main sound / instrument group such as piano or bass or brass.
Pick an existing sound eg grand piano, then you can alter the parameters of different parts of the note. The first thing to understand is the different parts of the note, on most synths this will be described as: Attack [the first part of the note when the key is struck] then Decay [the sound made while the key is pressed] and then Release [the sound after the note is 'released' oddly enough!!!].
