topsailangler says: If either of these two win the presidency, it'll only be because of a lack of a strong Republican contender and apathy on the part of conservatives. Where is Reagan when you need him....... Dead and buried, thank the good lord! That raises no hackles whatsoever rat. Exactly what a socialist (Marxist? Communist?) would be expected to say. The only sad thing is that you spread ANTI American philosophy. I don't think they imagined you or your professors when they thought about free speech. Looking back Reagan was the kind of man we needed. He cared about America. What do we have now? Bushes, Clintons, Giuliani ?..... ALL set to intentionally diminish America in all aspects. I am neither, so your labels are wasted. As for Reagan, I lived through his years and I have no need to celebrate, the man was no hero (and why do my professors have to do with any of this anyway). If my words are not worthy of this free speech you speak of, then I guess its not as free as it should be.They are anti alright, but no necessarily anti-American. unless you think you have a lock on what is and is not American. I sense fear in yours, what is it your so afraid of? I can't speak for Davboz but there is no fear here of your words even if they are disrespectful. You are entitled, so are we. Reagan was a good man and a great president. He restored decency to an office that had been tarnished by Nixon and demoralized by Carter. He righted our economy that had out of control inflation and stagnant growth. He restored our military capability and our stature in the World. While not without flaws, he was what America needed then (and could use a some of now IMO). You might not agree with all that he stood for or even acknowledge all the good that he did, but even most democrats agree he was a good president. So your comments, like it or not, put you in... Reagan made me throw-up. I guess that puts me there, too. Even the notion of a man of his character returning to the office brings that horrible taste back. He was a bag of wind, an eloquent George W. Bush, in water over his head. BTW, nice try at rewriting history... even most democrats agree he was a good president.I know lots of dems, and to a man or woman not a one of them would agree with that statement. BartendingBear - let's start with those that got him elected and kept him there - often known as Reagan Democrats - here's what Wikipedia says: Reagan Democrat is an American political term used by political analysts to denote traditionally Democratic voters, especially white working-class Northerners, who defected from their party to support Republican President Ronald Reagan in both the 1980 and 1984 elections. The term Reagan Democrat also refers to the vast sway that Reagan held over the House of Representatives during his presidency, even though the house had a Democratic majority during both of his terms Then let's take a look at comments by some congressional Democrats: "As an Ame... Let me put this way: If anyone should win the Oscar for the best actor of the 20th Century, Reagan wins hands down. For 8 years he pretended to be the President and everybody believed him. As for his achievements: Restoring the arm forces. Except for running a huge bill, most of the restoration happened "in house", by the Herculean efforts of men and women in the armed forces who stayed after Vietnam and fought the battles to restore it. He simply went spending happy ($6,000.00 toilet seat covers anyone). Central America became awash with the blood of thousands, hundreds of thousands in places like Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Supported right-wing death squads and right-wing dic... Thanks, Rat. You took the words "Iran-Contra" right out of my mouth. I'm sorry Ratilfar - it is apparent that you have no idea about the Carter-Regan years in the US military. I do, I served in the US Navy during both of those presidencies. Carter demoralized the military to the point that it couldn't even launch, much less succeed at a rescue attempt of the hostages in Iran. The military had little funding for operations and could barely keep the equipment running. We had little confidence in our equipment or methods (as we didn't get a lot of practice, torpedos and bullets cost money). Reagan changed all that. Yes he spent money, it was needed. But he did much more than that, he restored morale, gave us confidence that we could once again be the bes... It also locked the military into an anachronistic view of war on the North Atlantic/West German plain a mode that it still suffers from. And all weapon purchases are done by the plutocrats, or at least under their supposed supervision (civilian trumps military last time I checked). The military avoided confronting the realities of its failures in Vietnam and concentrated on conventional/nuclear war and Reagan also made some huge mistakes, like Lebanon and Grenada (Grenada was not a bigger boondoggle because there really was no enemy there to begin with) . You also conveniently ignored the price pay by so many because of Reagan's Cold War policies (some preceded him, other where cranked ou... Although I will give you credit where credit is due, you at least avoided the often repeated claim that Reagan "won" the Cold War. He was smart enough to recognize that it was better to end it with Gorbachev then and there and keep the whole charade alive. For clarification - my money spending statement was in regards to the toilet price mentioned in an earlier comment. Sorry but I don't think our president has much to do with buying routine stuff like toilets. Weapon systems, yes - but in actuality it's congress that holds the purse strings. Fair enough. |
