I don't know much about anything, but I do know this - it works for me.

Vastly over-prescribed in general, but highly effective and wortwhile for some. Some claim St. John's Wort is a good alternative.

I can say that it definitely works for me, my mom, my husband, and most clients I have worked with.

One question any patient should ask when a doctor is writing a prescription: how long has this drug been on the market?

The reason this question matters is that drug companies need to recoup the development and marketing costs for newly introduced drugs, which makes them more expensive. Drugs that have been around for years, especially if they're approaching the end of their patent, are both more likely to be affordable and less likely to be prescribed because they're the latest spiffy cure-all silver bullet.

Also, the longer a drug has been in use, the more data you have to evaluate how effective it actually is.

They worked for me and I tried a lot of other things, before I got better.

I sometimes feel like I'm the only person on the face of the earth who doesn't take them. After being raped I was put on them when I was diagnosed into going into a very severe clinical depression, and I took them for a very short time and quit when I woke up one morning thinking it might be a natural thing to take a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger. Thank God I did quit, because as soon as I did quit that particular thought which I had never had before in my entire life went away. Somehow, by the grace of God, I pulled out of this depression without any medication. I like to think it was that the sun came out one day and I was able to hop onto my riding lawn mower and ride in the su...

Gee, a lot of you Democrats have depression problems.....just kidding...couldn't help myself.`Short term depression can usually be treated with the right antidepressant and a little therapy. Long term, or clinical depression like I have is a real pain in the butt. Most antidepressants only work well for two or three years before becoming ineffective. Then you have to try different ones until you find one that works. Bottom line, speaking for myself, about every third year is lousy. But nothing is worse than a major episode of depression. If you've ever wondered how people can take their own lives, its simple,
they can't take one more minute of the pain.

Indeed. I had my first bout of depression and suicide attempt when I was 8 years old. (My weakness appears to be hereditary as both my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother suffered from depression). Medication and the Grace of God keep me from ending it.

I have taken anti depressants since I was a child of ten on and off. I have NEVER EVER liked taking them and if I could find another way then I would take it. St. John's Wort is ok but I live in Spain and it can't be taken if you are outside in the sun. What I would really love to find is a GOOD psychologist. A Dr. friend says that depression is like diabetes, we have to take the meds to keep going. If it is simply a question of the psychological effect of taking a tablet we think has a good effect on us, so much the better, let the doctors give us a placebo tab, no secondary effects and on with life!!!!

Me too. Sometimes I stop for a few months, only to be forced back on when I hit rock bottom. I hate the thought that 'sanity' comes in tablet form, but it does.

I have never taken anti-depressants so I'm not qualified to judge them but If they help that's what matters.

Here is a problem I have seen more than once. One of my friends started taking them for what I considered just a minor issue. Once she was on them, she couldn't get off without suffering a rebound effect. Now she has had to up her dosage considerably. I've seen that happen a lot. It has killed her sex drive completely. She thinks "ugh". I think they can be addictive to some people.

And thus my comment that they are vastly over-prescribed.

I've tried them but they don't seem to work for me. I just try and muddle through life the best I can and I'm thankful my family is self-centred enough not to pay to much attention to my moods.

As BartendingBear already stated, St. John's Wort can be effective (I think it's the biggest selling alternative medicine in Germany - or was a couple of years ago); seems to help in maintaining a psychological equilibrium. Not to be taken by people who have heart conditions (always research medications). I guess, as some have already mentioned, if the pill works - or you think it works - then that's better than the alternative. I can't help thinking that ( even while I was on antidepressants for a while - could no longer afford the 'Wort') that it should always be a last resort.Treating the condition with pills is like attempting surgery with a carrot rather than a scalpel; and, as we are ...
