wildcat says: the way it parses the world around us, the way it uses shortcuts and assumptions would have served our hunter-gatherer ancestors well, but it is less than perfect for dealing with some of the problems we face in the 21st Century. the whole concept of a world made up of objects is so obvious to us that it's hard to even conceive that there might be other views of the world, let alone really understand them. yet, that's only one model of reality. that whole object-oriented reality is just a function of our visual system, which is organized in such a way as to pick out separate things, i.e. objects; and somewhere along the line that part of the brain came to be dominant in mammals and birds (and reptiles too? I would guess, but not sure), because that's a very handy way for us critters to handle reality. we even try to use that model in software, because we are good at thinking about objects and their properties and ... |
