Well, I'm too young for '68, but in the spring of '71, I remember waking up in my dorm room at the U of Iowa, sensing something was wrong, running across the hall to a room that overlooked a large courtyard. The spotlights from above lit only a huge, gray fog - it was teargas. And out of the fog came marching, in formation, with (as I remember it) shotguns on their hips pointing forward, and in full riot gear, sweeping the courtyard. I had no idea but what they would be coming into our rooms and dragging us out - they were sheriff's deputies, and highly hostile and provacative to students. I have never been in a place before or since when the authorities have gone mad, and there was liter...

I feel for marchers in Selma - it is a terrifying thing to be beyond the protection of the law.
So much worse when what you need protection from is the very same law enforcement that's meant to protect you. Has much changed? Good comment, Masbury.
