Oldies Only: Did you make History in 1968?

Well, I'm too young for '68, but in the spring of '71, I remember waking up in my dorm room at the U of Iowa, sensing something was wrong, running across the hall to a room that overlooked a large courtyard. The spotlights from above lit only a huge, gray fog - it was teargas. And out of the fog came marching, in formation, with (as I remember it) shotguns on their hips pointing forward, and in full riot gear, sweeping the courtyard. I had no idea but what they would be coming into our rooms and dragging us out - they were sheriff's deputies, and highly hostile and provacative to students. I have never been in a place before or since when the authorities have gone mad, and there was literally no one to call for help. I feel for marchers in Selma - it is a terrifying thing to be beyond the protection of the law.
