El virus es el mismo que causa la varicela y, como apunta Picazo, luego "se esconde" en el organismo y se queda anclado en los ganglios nerviosos, hasta que vuelve a asomarse dolorosamente en forma de la llamada "culebrilla".</DIV> La vacuna del herpes zóster estaría indicada, a juicio de los especialistas, para las personas de mayor riesgo, sobre todo por encima de los 65 años. Hay que considerar, mientras "el hecho de pasar la varicela garantiza que el virus está ahí", la administración infantil de "la vacuna contra ella no garantiza la inmunidad ante el herpes zóster".
