History suggests that major social policy unfolds on a continuum. The Social Security Act of 1935 disappointed liberal New Dealers because what was called "old-age insurance" covered only about half the adult population. It excluded farmhands, domestics, employees of small businesses, and most blacks. That was because FDR needed the votes of Southern Democrats, the Blue Dogs of their day. (The bill cleared the House Ways and Means Committee with only one Republican vote.) Similarly, the Civil Rights Act of 1957 ... was weak tea. It had to be strengthened by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In the later bills, Lyndon Johnson betrayed Southerners he had made deals with in 1957. If Nancy Pelosi can't break Rahm Emanuel's promise to Big Pharma's Billy Tauzin this year, she can try to break it in the future. And Tauzin will lobby for more favors as the all-important new regulations are issued. Nothing in Washington is ever set in stone.

If health care reform goes down in flames this time, I won't blame Republicans, town hall crashers, Fox News or the conservative elite who are funding disinformation campaigns. I will blame the Blue Dog Democrats beholden to Big Pharma, the selfish Far Left with their dreams of Nader and those who canvased and voted for Obama and now sit on their butts doing nothing because they're tired or don't want to speak to their neighbors about something as personal as health care (actual excuses), as if they have to get into a deep discussion about grandpa's colostomy bag to get their point across. If the Blue Dogs, selfish far left and lame Obama voters were a force in 1968 the Civil ...

I'd agree - Democrats have all the power and the votes. They could ram this thing through wihtout one Republican vote. Why don't they?

Well, destroying the American health care system in order to put government in control of every person's entire existence from birth to death is a bit extreme. And they know if they do it alone, the backlash against them will be severe.

Government in charge of everyone's existence from birth to death? Hmmm.. well that isn't the purpose of health care reform, but hey, better corporate control of you life from birth to death than government. Yes, the current state of the economy has taught us all that corporations care so much about the health and well being of Americans. Severe backlash? Do you mean electoral backlash or assassination?

CR - Have you ever been to Europe? Europeans are healthy. Some American's love to hate France, but if you were there and got sick in the middle of the night a doctor would come to you. People in France and Denmark aren't forced to file bankruptcy because they can't afford medical treatments....
