In particular, in it's use of Marxist and neo-Marxist social theory it
may be superficially read both by undiscerning theologians and
sympathetic sociologists as a form of radical social theory

the epistemological staus of a theology which integrates elements of
Marxist theory (Congragation for the Doctrine of Faith, 1984).
The
hybrid form of liberation theology creates an initial impediment to
definition`. One might go further and say that the use of the noun in
the singular, "theology", to describe the corpus of liberation
literature, as if it were in any way comparable to classical systematic
theology, is misleading."
