After more than three years of waiting, the parents of the captive Israeli 
soldier Gilad Shalit have been told they will receive concrete proof that he 
is alive.

This Friday a videotape of Gilad Shalit will be released in exchange for 20 
Palestinian women who are currently in Israeli jails, according to a deal 
announced by Israel and Hamas militants.

It was the first significant progress made in negotiations to free Gilad 
Shalit since he was captured by Hamas-linked militants and taken into Gaza 
during a cross-border raid in June 2006.

Israel said that the video was a “confidence-building measure”, though 
negotiations were likely to be “long and difficult”.
