wildcat says: a fascinating and interesting read:from the article: "It is as yet undetermined what it means to be human, because every facet of our culture—and even our biology itself—remains open to innovation and insight." I have often thought that Buddhism is more of a philosophy...a way...than a religion. This is a great sentence... the methodology of Buddhism, if shorn of its religious encumbrances, could be one of our greatest resources as we struggle to develop our scientific understanding of human subjectivity. Actually, Theravada Buddhism is atheistic, they refer to the Buddha as an incredibly wise MORTAL teacher Good call eric and npace "I have often thought that Buddhism is more of a philosophy...a way...than a religion." I told that to my prof in Religion course 35 years ago. He said I was "very wise".-- He didn't know my father and I used to discuss Eastern religions extensively when I was growing up. Forgotten more than I remember, tho. My current mentor in life is a bartender who is a Buddhist. She is one of the nicest, most thoughtful, most honest and caring people I have ever known. She always leaves me with little nuggets of wisdom (sometimes after talking with her I feel like "Grasshopper" from the Kung Fu tv show). She is my role model. |
