Oh wow, I didn't know they could restore some of the physical damage of Female circumcision... That's really cool.

However... I wonder... (since I'm not a woman) can that really start to heal the emotional damage that goes along with it?

Certainly I appreciate the serious and important nature of this topic, and consequently I did make a donation, as I hope all who read it do. However...

Forgive the horn-dog in me, but I had hopes for something totally different when I clicked this clip.

I'd heard about "female circumcision" before, but just assumed that there was nothing to be done for these poor ladies. It's good to hear that there's a possibility of undoing at least some of the physical damage that was done.

This clip was featured on today's Clipiversity video podcast. Thanks for the great clip!

@ericskiff
Thanks for the mention! It is great that through the
miracle of modern medicine, these women are able to feel pleasure
again. I agree with EricG that they may
never fully recover psychologically; however, I'm sure this helps a
great deal in the recovery process.

@BartendingBear
This is indeed an important issue. I'm sure
every contribution, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. From
my understanding, the "Pleasure Hospital" will be built by women who
have or will undergo this procedure.
from the site:

"The local authorities have given the needed authorization so that we
can start the construction of our Pleasure Hospital and on...

LOL BartendingBear. I hesitated before opening this clip because I didn't want to adopt any such thing, but curiosity got the better of me.

However, I am pleased that those who have been so terribly mutilated can have corrective surgery. As for the emotional scars .... ? Another aspect of female mutilation is tribal scarring which, when inflicted on children, is an excrutiating(sic) thing to watch, let alone endure.

I saw a news segment on CNN in 1994 that showed the father doing this to his own daughter. It was traumatizing to see. Can't imagine what these poor children have endured.

This site is sponsored by Raelian Movement, who are mixed up in intelligent design theories... doesn't mean this isn't a good idea, just something to be aware of when donating money.

Many other religions sponsor charities as well, but I don't see how this is relevant.

tariqabdul -

Although Female Circumcision does take place in Muslim Sub-Saharan Africa, and has been practiced by Muslims, it is not even remotely an Islamic tradition. It is also practiced by many non-Muslims. It is best described as a sub-Saharan African folk custom.

Although Islam does not discourage the practice of local traditions and customs, I would say it is not completely fair to associate this with Islam. It is a product of zealous fervor, misogyny and old-fashioned thinking, to be sure, but that is common in all societies.

I agree with you ouyang... it's not an Islamic tradition. It's an African custom. Moslems, Christians, some African cultures and indigenous religions practice it. It's not only girls who suffer. In South Africa, annually, teenage Xhosa boys are subject to primitive circumstantial ceremonies as a right of passage to adulthood. Every year many end up having to undergo penectomies(s) to correct the botched 'operations' and many die.
