Ask a Social Psychologist or Sociologist, and they'll say color is an idea that resides in the human cognitive system. It takes the raw data gleaned from the light received by the eye, and interprets it through cultural lenses before storing it into short and long term memory. Some cultures report this as "black and white are colors" whereas other cultures report the that black is a color but white is the absence of color, and still others report the converse.
