The variety of local accents can be apparent in many places. London has four main geographic accents, and in north Bucks the local accent can be markedly different between settlements a relatively short distance apart.

Researchers from the universities of Liverpool, Lancaster and Edinburgh are looking at how Scouse developed and its representation in modern culture.

Experts, meeting at the Merseyside Maritime Museum, are also talking about the difficulty of tracking its origins.

Experts are also discussing issues of identity that comes with the accent, which was first identified in the late 19th Century.

Dr Hamer said people living in different parts of Merseyside can often identify which part of the region someone comes from based on their accent.

"The fascinating variety of Scouse accents offers a challenge to linguists attempting to describe Merseyside speech," he added.
