bignosemousie says: I'm staying put, but for those that need to evacuate, stay safe. Ok Mousie...all ya'll be smart and take all the precautions. :~/ take care BNM...be careful... San Antonio, thus far, is going to be missed by the brunt of Ike. Houston, however, is moving out! They only have 48 hours before hurricane conditions set in. knslyr is evacuating today, he lives more coastal. I certainly hope it goes better than the last evacuation. I think people are getting out earlier this time, to avoid the rush. Gas stations around town are already out of gasoline. Thanks for the well wishes, too! I'll be fine. Stay safe...please! Stay safe, keep your head, and play it cool! Take care of yourself and your little girl too. Be safe and your usual cool self and you're in my thoughts and prayers. Tarrible Thanks everyone. It looks like it will stay a Cat.2 before it hits.(good news!) Houston will be better off it it hits a little east of us, but for now it looks like a direct hit. Officials are saying "Evacuate shore or face certain death." I hope our coastal Clippers are safe and sound inland. May you and your loved ones be protected from the storm. Your common sense will see you thru the crisis. Be well and clip often as you can so we know you are ok. Best wishes for your safety! Take care! report back in (when able) so everyone will know your o.k.! Just heard that it's strengthened to just 1 mile from a Cat. 3!!! And it's looking very bad for Louisiana too. Levees breached in Louisiana. Storm surge driven by Hurricane Ike breached levees in coastal The main problem is, Ike got stronger as it got closer to land. Tomorrow morning's news should be interesting, and unfortunately not in a good way. Stay safe! Houston Chronicle The east and west ends of Galveston Island are under water, and water is pouring over the seawall. Power and utilities are out. There are multiple fires; rain is helping extinguishing some. We'll still have 80 mph winds for the next 4 hours or so. Unbelievably, I still have power. I think most of the city is down. Looks like a mess outside, but I am so thankful for my family's safety. Sadly, only 60% of Galveston residents evacuated. Officials asked that people that stayed write their SSNs on their arms. I hope the death toll isn't high. Mousie, knslyr, wiccantexan... I hope you all are fine. The news clip I watched a few mins ago at evening news showed some very scary scenes. My all good wishes are with you and all Texans. Thanks, invictus! San Antonio got next to nothing; 99 degrees, a few scattered showers. I'm awaiting a call from my friend, who's on the FEMA team, about how things are on the coast. knslyr is at my house now. Their house is fine but no power. Everyone is fine. Thanks, Invictus, for the concern. I hope other Clippers on the coast are okay. I am joyous at your survivability! Seriously, I'm happy you guys are ok. Is there much damage? Is your insurance going to cover it? What was your daughter's reaction to the storm? Was she concerned about her new school? If I was down there I'd come over for a cup of coffee too. How long before you guess everything will be back to normal? Skwirl, thanks. We still have low water pressure, so basically no potable water. Our only damage is to our fence. My daughter slept through the worst of the storm and told someone yesterday "when I woke up I was amazed at all the trees and leaves everywhere." LOL. She isn't really concerned about anything. Her school is closed tomorrow and maybe longer. As soon as we get the water back things will be mostly fine on my side of town. The east and south of Houston will be messed up in some capacity for maybe a month. Galveston and Kemah will be messed up for months, most likely. The pictures of the devastation were surreal - of course, they always are. That old adage, "What doesn't kill ya' makes you stronger" never seems to be very comforting until AFTER you come out of the disaster and back onto the "normal" side of life. Sometimes, the changes are so dramatic that there will be a "new" normal to adapt to. Either way, hang in there, Mousie and Family! Please know that there are many more thoughts with you, and for everyone who is suffering right now. Nice to hear, I mean see or, more precisely, read you again, bignosemousie. I thought about your family, your neighbors, friends... Sure, I was not alone. When something happening, and serious like this, it's involving, touching each of us. Bell tolls... And for all of us you become the source of fresh, independent information directly from area of devastation. You show us real texan, american spirit, which can do wonders, rebuild and fix everything. May be not right now, but sooner or later we have to get some answers. Why it's happen? Not storm, but devastation. Why we need to rebuild our Gulf cities again and again? Was this storm something of extraordinary and such unusual? Otherwise we... Glad you and your family came safely through the storm. Glad to know you're doing alright mousie. I drove around the neighborhood yesterday and there are some mighty big trees totally uprooted. It is going to take the city months to clear all of this debris. I am really amazed at the damage from a cat 2. My parents live north of Houston and they probably won't have power for weeks. I cannot get my mind around it. At least we are having a cold front. High is only 83 tomorrow. That will help many people. Thanks for your concern everyone. I really appreciate it. It was the size of the storm, not so much the Cat, that contributed to all that damage. The storm surge was tremendously strong. Here are some slide shows of the damage. One of my friends in Houston (retired Police Officer)had some major flooding and said things are quite the mess. Glad to hear you made it through failry well, all things considered. Thank you Napster. |
