Think chimps responding to shapes and patterns (gestalts) whereas humans tend to pass numbers through higher cortical centres as numbers are abstract but important cultural symbols. Plus most of us have an emotional fear of numbers which would inhibit responses.To some extent the price we pay for cortical development and abstract, discursive thinking is to over-ride our basic thinking skills, perceptual abilities, memory etc (which is why young children not yet skilled in that way of being are better at some things than grown ups),
