Mr Obama is very popular in Europe and well worthy of such fine art work.

I think his popularity in Europe is something Americans will consider seriously, at least I hope so. Europe is not seen as a haven of the clear-minded in America.
It is not so much Obama's popularity as it is hero-worship. Americans have spent lives and treasure cleaning up European messes. The track record of judgment in leadership by Europeans is not something to be proud of. America may be slipping into a confused morass, but a majority are certainly not prone to hero-worship.

Clearly bauhaus referenced, and so many others, as Smoke TNT's excellent reference suggests. It's not my field, but I guess it will unravel its reflexivity in a surge of representational reference. Quite clearly, as a flat image alone, divested of aesthetic negotiation, it is set to become a fetishised commodity icon.
