long time no see Sam. Some great clips you found. I recall a quote from Oliver Stone's movie 'Nixon' : Nixon shuffles back alone, coming to a stop in front of a larger-than-life, full-length oil portrait of JOHN F. KENNEDY. Nixon studies the portrait, pads closer. Looks up. NIXON When they look at you, they see what they want to be. (then) When they look at me, they see what they are ... It's nice to see you again after a long time Sam, welcome back. All Empires fall, thats the way of history. The only way to avoid it is to shed the constricting coils of Imperial rule. But no one has ever done that (except, perhaps the British). Thanks for the encouragement. It's the deadpan seriousness of this article that makes it so disturbing. But no one has ever done that (except, perhaps the British)lol, yeah england did. by following in the US's footsteps- like capitalism, freedom of speech, parliament (we call it the senate) passing laws instead of a royal lineage, the ability to impeach your leader(representative) etc. rome went bankrupt, this is true. but the truth is as far as moral position goes, rome didn't have the freedom americans have (actually). you could be put to death w/o trial etc. they weren't as free as the greeks though some people think they were. and the level of corruption in the roman senate was more reminisant of the 'glory days' of the US from post civil war to about the 1960's... there... Oh, but I forgot to tell you who they handed the remnants of Empire to....the U.S. They literally lend/leased their Empire away. As for Rome, that may have been true of the Republic, but not true of the Empire. There it was the iron grip of tyrants some brilliant, some ruthless and some mad (but all despotic and cruel). Empire is a form of goverment (or meta-goverment) that is founded on the idea of constant and predatory (and by predatory I mean aggressive, and war like) acquisition of wealth. Empires have been ruled by Princes, Emperors, Prime Ministers, Premiers, Czars and Presidents and non have survive or will survive. That is the way of things. Uh... some points need to be corrected axelsenzon: by following in the US's footsteps- like capitalism, freedom of speech, parliament (we call it the senate)Actually, it's vice versa. Capitalism found its first mature form in England about a century before it was exported to the New world colonies. Likewise, the English parliament is more than 140 years older than the United States, even if we mark Oliver Cromwell's revolution as the beginning. The 1640 radical movement in England was the first successful revolution in Europe and it brought many new rights and liberties including free speech to the British (thanks to The Levellers' contributions.) rome didn't have ... actually. capitalism is attributed to the french. as an invention. made in the late 1700s. COMMERCE existed in the world before the us (or the french) oh yes. but 'free market' capitalisms is taught and attributed to the french- you may have learned in say economics 102. lazai fair capataism, ring a bell? parliament, i didnt say was invented my america- i said taking power away from a single entity (namely the king and queen of england) wasn't an attribute of the british as a sole proprietor of this- clearly america did this before england- and they followed in their steed. invictus, if you think i cannot (rather people should not) compare the a government of a 1000 years ago to today or to one of 1000 yrs before them. i believe you didnt read the actual article- because thats the thesis. i think i and most people who compare one government to another, be it past or present- should be allowed to and not have it been said there is no merit to the idea of comparison. (if i seem rash, i've been bombarded with telemarketing calls since i walked in... its very annoying) ratilfar, history is on your side with that point. though, to metaphor, you can play a stock or two and be certain it will make money- history would be on you side as well (if you wait long enough, and if it doesn't go bankrupt), but will it happen in you lifetime shouldn't be so obvious, at least not with a country.... america could stand strong for an other 800 years in my opinion. i think, personally, the way to achieve more of what people want done (whether your the majority or think you're the majority) people will have to stop looking east when the action is west. and understand where the power of this country lie. like it or not (this isn;t directed at anyone) niether ny times nor fo... I guess your confusing two things, America the nation-state and the American Empire. The first could well survive for a long time (many nation states have and do) but Empire's fall and I am afraid that this one is on the decline. Axelsenzon, thanks for your replies. But I must say: * First, you confuse "liberalism" and capitalism. The first one is based upon the question of how to practice a certain form of production, while the latter is the very essence of that form itself. "Laissez-passer, Laissez-faire" was the motto of the physiocrats that flourished in France in the 18th century, who were against the government interference in economic activities, defending private initiative. The motto became a generally accepted attitude among British liberals (like Richard Cobden) in early 19th century. Though he never used the term laissez-passer, Adam Smith was among the earliest defenders of free trade and he was Scott... Continueing: * You said: i said taking power away from a single entity (namely the king and queen of england) wasn't an attribute of the british as a sole proprietor of this- clearly america did this before england- and they followed in their steed.Actually, 1640 English Revolution did exactly that. The Parliament took the power from the King (Charles I) and even finally decapitated him. The Parliament became the main power in the country until Cromwell's death and the Restoration period. In other words, clearly England did this before America. It was the excitement of the 1640 spirit which triggered later revolutions in both Europe and America. If you mean the "first mode... i think i and most people who compare one government to another, be it past or present- should be allowed to and not have it been said there is no merit to the idea of comparison.I never talked about "allowance". Of course anyone can make any comparison, anytime as he/she wishes. I was just expressing my opinion, saying it was not very meaningful and fair to compare two societies when they have sociologically, politically and economically very deep differences. It's not just a matter of 1000 years, but also a matter of entirely different social classes and production forms. I personally believe, no one should expect to see "more freedom and liberty" in a state/country of the... Interesting how nobody talks about the point Walker is trying to make. e.g. what will the quality of life and death be which baby-boomers are going to face, not to mention that of their children and their children's children (if they have anywhere). Perhaps, I could refer people to my clip of the same article (Part 2) where Walker talks about "inter-generational equity". Those who have studied history and are of a certain age, born in the 40's, realize that we've been following Rome's path since Kennedy's assassination when Johnson became president. He changed social security from a supplement for savings and private pensions to low-income program, disability program, added medicare, medicaid, "Great Society" and the "War on Poverty". We cannot continue all these programs without massive tax increases or drastic cuts in benefits (entitlements). It appears that we're going to go back to what society was like before 1935 when the first FICA taxes were taken out. For baby boomers it appears they will have lived through the biggest boom and probably biggest bust of federal services. You can make the counter argument that the U.S. spends too much on "defense" and not enough on basic services and support for its citizenry. You can have Guns or Butter, but not both. We can have both but we need a lot less guns and a lot more butter. Should have voted for the guy who would have put a lock box on Social Security instead of the guy willing to open Pandora's box. inviticus, i certainly am not confusing liberalism and capitalism, but you may be confusing commerce, mercantilism and capitalism. there is merit to what your saying in certain aspects but, for example, 15th century england did not have capitalism, i think your right about my remark on the french's role (i did check out my book), etc. but thanks for putting me in my place.... ratilfar: I guess your confusing two things, America the nation-state and the American Empire. The first could well survive for a long time (many nation states have and do) but Empire's fall and I am afraid that this one is on the decline.I think you need to stop using your own definative terms, becau... You can have Guns or Butter, but not both.lol, what are you a lyndon johnson fan?, thats funny. (you know both were in referance to the army and their conditions when originally said) Simple, Nation-State as in Rome is Rome and Empire is everything else. As in control, mostly by proxy of large areas of the world (control that is diminishing as we speak). That is the U.S. itself as a political entity is nation-state, its Empire it its power projected around the world (based on dubious claims of "vital interest"). As been a Lyndon B. Johnson fan, no I am not, but that does not mean that he was wrong, even thought he tried to have it both ways (the Great Society, plus Imperial intervention in South East Asia). By doing so he proved his point better than anyone else could. Wiki it, Wikipedia has all the answers... textbooks, pfft. Wikipedia is the ultimate textbook. Hey you guys sound like Plato in the opening of the "Dialogs" What a bitch- I mean it, quibbling over semantics and such- We live in the greatest country on this planet! It sucks that we have leaders, that have for the first time in our history, gone to war w/out justifiable provocation.(the possible exception being the Spanish American war). But lets give George the benefit of the doubt. We were right to go to war in Afghanistan, the Taliban were responsible for the deaths of 3000 of my fellow citizens (non-combatants as well) and I'm no Sadam Hussain fan, but we invaded a sovereign nation w/out the proper intelligence info and thats why we are likely to fall like Rome did when the rest of ... Spanish-American war.. How about the Mexican-American War and the Vietnam war? As for praying to the east...that a bit far fetched...exactly how would that happen? Whoa, invictus took axelsenzon to school on that one. Sorry d00d, u got pwned. I'm popping this because of all these comments. It's like watching a presidential debate! lol I know I belong to the previous century... ie. Ancient... and I have been trying to resist asking for this explanation.... But I must absolutely try to keep up with you the Young... Please will someone explain what "LOL " means... I like to at least feel I'm keeping up with the TIMES... At least as far as langugege goes ... Thanks... laughing out loud...no problems net speak gets some getting use to. |
