Nicola Tesla tried to do this, but he got shut down because they couldn't figure out how to bill the users for the power they used.
AM radios also draw power from radio waves.

problem is, you have to broadcast more power than the receiver needs, just to broadcast it that distance in a sphere.
Of cause, there are ways around that.
