The earthquakes mean the Juan de Fuca plate is on the move but only part of it. The transverse fault off the coast of Oregon where all the fuss lies is under serious stress as one side is moving suddenly and rapidly. This is the same effect as the San Andreas Fault but much busier. And offshore. And shorter, making the "hits" smaller. The real issue is where is all that eastbound plate volume going? Under Washington, Oregon and northern California. To activate the coastal volcanoes eventually. Just how long before it has an effect is the question. Thanks! I don't know much about that sort of thing. So, maybe California really IS in danger of sliding into the ocean. Would this plate affect the San Andreas? Their part of the Ring of Fire...worse case scenario is that the whole thing "unzips" but I doubt it. Not unheard of in geological time, but rare these past few million years. |
