This is an old urban legend. Modern carriers don't rely on lighthouses to tell them where the land is. They have the most advanced GPS available today.

Yes it's an "old" legend. First time I heard of it the other protagonist was a Greek lighthouse keeper. So apparently the legend has many variations but still makes for an hilarious story ^_^
