einbar says: "Over the years there were many speculations and possible explanations made on how the stones move, ranging from supernatural to very complex. Most hypotheses favored by interested geologists posit that strong winds when the mud is wet are at least in part responsible. But some stones weigh as much as a human, which some researchers feel is too heavy for the area's wind to move. They maintain that ice sheets around the stones either help to catch the wind or move in ice flows. But both theories don't explain how two rocks right next to each other could go in two opposite directions or one could stay put while the one three times the size, doesn't. So far every attempt of explanation has been insufficient and purely assumptive. The mystery of moving rocks is yet to be revealed". It's wind. It's been explained. And quite often wind has eddys that blow stuff in opposite directions. Watch leaves in water on a blustering autum day and you will see fine examples of this. I believe there has even been video footage capturing rocks moving from the wind. Not sure where you can find it, however. It's one of those things that I'd seen on a television documentary that showed the evidence and I recall thinking "Heh, that mysterys' been solved". These are the best photos I've seen of these rocks. Sometimes mysteries are nice That rock needs GPS and a webcam... Yes, we like mysteries "Ooh you're working Building a mystery Holding on and holding it in Yeah you're working Building a mystery And choosing so carefully Yeah you're working Building a mystery Holding on and holding it in Yeah you're working Building a mystery And choosing so carefully You're building a mystery " (Sarah McLachlan Building Mystery) Moving Rocks of Death Valley's Racetrack Captured on video for the first time: the mysterious forces that move rocks across the surface of Racetrack Playa in California's Death Valley. As featured on Japanese television. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1hoiHvOeGc more answer : http://petesplace-peter.blogspot.com/2008/08/mysterious-mother-nature.html Monday, August 4, 2008 Mysterious Mother Nature What causes these rocks to move? Is it global warming? Well, yes, in a way. Most of the valleys in the Nevada and California Basin and Range Province contained large lakes filled with water from melting glaciers covering the surrounding mountains during the last Ice Age. This is known as The Wisconsin Ice Age in North America and the Wurm Ice Age in Europe. (Search this blog for Lake Lahontan, for more information.) One question is "how did the rocks get out onto the lake beds in the first place?" They probably rolled down the mountainsides due to natural... Makes sense to me. Great info Destiny and einbar. It's a shame that so many people jump to supernatural conclusions when they are faced with something that has no ready explanations. I love the internet simply because it allows us to find knowledge like this so easily and readily. |
