Is the timing a bit weird?

I always figured it would be a sudden heart attack. I guess that would have been too obvious. Nothing like a potential blood clot to cause one to resign from the Vice Presidency.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) can cause sudden death.

If the clot in the leg vein breaks loose and travels to the chest and into the pulmonary circulation, it can totally shut off blood supply to the lungs. This is called pulmonary embolism and it can kill in minutes.

If this happened to Cheney, and his implanted defibrillator tried to restart his heart, it wouldn't work because heart muscles with no oxygen supply die quickly and wouldn't respond to the defibrillator shocks.

Cheney had better take it easy for a while.

I agree with Eric that the timing is suspect for a complete resignation.
