To me this issue seems to be the "elephant" in the room that no one wants to discuss. We need to stop occupying so many countries and withdraw our troops.
Why should we be providing for the security of all these other nations at the expense of our own security and at the cost to our economy? It would be a bad idea even if we were being paid to have our forces used as mercenaries for other nations. The fact that we have to pay other nations to allow them to let us "protect them" is insane.
To use as forces as temporary international peacekeepers is one thing. That could be accetable under a number of scenarios. But Germany and Japan no longer require US occupation forces to keep the peace. Do...

How many here have any idea of how many bases and people you are talking about.

'Policing the world' is what is known as a 'Mission Statement' : translation - that's the b.s. you use to 'justify' your presence.
It'll take a while for it to sink in that something is more than a little odd.

Ron Paul has been saying this for years, instead of listening to him, he was labeled an isolationist, which he is not. There is a big difference between isolationism and non-interventionalism. We wouldn't want foreign troops to have bases all over the US, why should we force other nations to have US bases on their soil. It is not our job to police the world.

Sahara, complete agreement here! I also was irked that people could get away with labeling Ron Paul an isolationist. It seems like we have only two settings to consider: intervention or isolation.
Friend of mine is fond of saying, "When all you've got's a hammer, everything looks like a nail." What we've got is the largest, most sophisticated military in the world, and because we do, we produce 100 military possibilities for every diplomatic one. Our military is Charles Atlas; our State Department is a 90-lb weakling.
