TheCatWhisperer says: Stupid homophobic school administrators. Nuff said. If I were the students, I'd refuse the yearbook until it was re-printed, un-edited. Especially if I as the student had to pay for the yearbook. (If I had previously paid for it, I'd take them to court to get my money back.) Fucking unbelievable. Apparently: - he paid over $100 for the yearbook. - The superintendent citied the image as bing too illicit for the year book - there are photos of heterosexual couples kissing on the next page and the previous page - the staff used marker to black-out the picture in one room while they were handing out the freshly "edited" yearbooks in the next room. video story here So there were plenty of pictures of heterosexual couples kissing? The nerve of homosexual's actually being proud of who they are today instead of hiding in the closet like they were once forced to! I think the administrators deluded tunnel vision turned this into something that should have never been an issue. Update: The school has apologized and offered uncensored versions of the yearbook to all who want one. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/06/25/national/main2977259.shtml?source=mostpop_story Thanks for the update, WT. At least, on the whole, we smack those who make these stupid decisions. It wasn't so long ago that the news would have been about how people were outraged that the school would allow such a photo. Today, we're outraged that they'd try to censor it. Small steps, but at least they're in the right direction. I love it when people commit Freudian slips. "Illicit" as in illegal? Sorry Principal Skinner, its not illegal, no matter how much you want it to be. Thanks Wiccan for the update... I really enjoyed the following: "The decision was based, in part, on misinformation that Mr. Jackson was not one of our students and our review simply focused on the suggestive nature of the photograph," the district said.Funny, that wasn't the reason given originally (which appears further in the article) Previously, Bolden had described the picture, which showed Jackson kissing boyfriend David Escobales, as "illicit." Staff used markers to black out a picture of a male student kissing hisWhat administrative genius didn't pre-approve the final copy coming out of the yearbook staff? I would've paid extra for the uncensored version just to watch school staff blacking this picture out. I bet that was an exciting task. How stupid. And if they're offering the uncensored version to those who want it, then why not just keep the picture in all of the yearbooks? Maybe they think seeing a gay couple kiss will...*gasp*...turn heterosexuals into homosexuals. I didn't know gays are so powerful and... What administrative genius didn't pre-approve the final copy coming out of the yearbook staff?EXACTLY! School is where no kissing should take place. It is for academic learning only. Yes, and kids should show up to class on time, there should be a strict-ish dress code, kids should respect thier teachers, etc, etc, etc.. now let's get out of the fantasy world and into reality. Kids will kiss, hug, and probably more on school premises. Its a fact. Let's get beyond that and realize that that is not what this post was about. |
