The city itself is contained in a small area, known as the City Bowl, underneath Table Mountain and Signal Hill. The feel of the city is dominated by its historic role as a trading port linking Africa and Europe, with elegant colonial buildings, cobbled streets, open markets and certainly a relaxed, laid-back attitude. Cape Town's "suburbs" stretch to the north of the city and more than 30 km to the south.
