South African schools apparently have the same problems as schools in the USA and other countries: poor student performance and discipline problems. 200 South African schools are threatened with closure if performance does not improve by the end of the month.

I found it interesting that the teacher's union is defensive and opposes the closings, while the Dept of Education states that their research showed that dysfunctional parenting is contributing to the children's unmanageable behavior and poor performance in school. This sounds so very familiar to me, based on what I know of the educational system in the USA.
