Personally, I think I'd rather not do it that way, but the repression must have been unbearable.

i remember this in the news - just like it was yesterday- it is as mind chilling now as then- and when i look around where the world is at right now-seems to me that we really haven't come all that far from this point in time- just one Doodle's opinion though-

I remember this very well too. - But I never have seen this as a sign of great religious statement then as a desperate cry against an inhuman system and for people's liberation from this tyranny that only existed through US war crimes..
Buddhism is in its roots a philosophy and no religion, so it goes in different nations very different ways until its today known manifestations, they are often very much related to the former religion and traditions of the people. It dosn't rule people with fear like other religions and don't teach doctrine of salvation by believe to religious dogma.

And yes there was nothing religious about it, only pain for what he had observed and experienced.
