Drewermann studierte Theologie, um festzustellen, "dass die katholische Kirche die Betrachtung des Menschen und seiner Seele auf Verstand und moralisch angestrengten guten Willen reduziert." Auf Ängste, Obsessionen oder Zwangshandlungen gebe die Kirche keine Antwort - Umstände, die für Drewermann zur Lebensaufgabe wurden.
