For such a sunny place, Hollywood turns out some dark visions. <CITE>Blade Runner, Brazil, The Terminator</CITE> — all dire predictions of a nightmarish future. But when it comes to sci-fi, movie audiences prefer cuddly aliens to a grim post apocalypse. In adjusted dollars, the feel-good <CITE>Close Encounters of the Third Kind</CITE> pulled in almost six times as much money as <CITE>The Terminator</CITE>. The rosiest outlooks tend to result in the biggest box office haul.
