I am skeptical. Water cannot exist on Mars given the atmosphere and conditions. It will be interesting to see if this story develops or disappears. If true, it would truly be amazing and pretty much ensure some sort of life is on Mars. If confirmed, the existence of such ponds would significantly boost the odds that living organisms could survive on or near the surface of Mars, says physicist Ron Levin, the report's lead author, who works in advanced image processing at the aerospace company Lockheed Martin in Arizona.I am also very skeptical. Recent reports about the high amounts of radiation reaching the surface and even penetrating ther soil down to 2-3 ft make life extremely unlikely if not impossible. Yeah but which one of you or any man has landed on Mars? What may be the norm on earth could be totally different on this planet. The liquid does not have to be water. As for radiation, we had [url"http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/98646544-319C-460B-B723-AC9C483CEE77/"]clip about fungus which actually "ate" radiation using melanin the way most plants "eat" sunlight using chlorophyll. Between that and the amazing forms of life we've found around thermal vents in the sea floor, I'm convinced that life will surprise us, appearing in unlikely places once we do find it. Dang, messed up the url. Here's the clip As for radiation, we had [url"http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/98646544-319C-460B-B723-AC9C483CEE77/"]clip about fungus which actually "ate" radiation using melanin the way most plants "eat" sunlight using chlorophyll. That is true to an extent but may not apply in the case of Mars. There are many different forms of ionizing radiation, Beta, Gamma, Alpha X-ray and even UV. The 'lifeforms' found in the nuclear power plants would not survive if exposed to the effects of UV radiation. For those of you who don't know what that really is, it is used in the medical field to sterilize glasses and ot... Looks like water. So does a mirage. I think that is a media conclusion, rather than a scientific opinion on the strength of the information we have. At least they have a specific example they can study which is bound to tell us a lot more about Mars What could be important is what we might learn even identifying it. If something that shouldn't be there is, we'll have fun learning why. All I can say is: I told you so ! see this clip New Scientist has proven itself time and time again to be loose with the facts and ideologically driven. What? Its a possibility that will need to be explored further, if could be lots of things, more rovers are on the way to the Red Planet to explore. It should not be dismissed out of hand. The scientist will check it out and verify. You also have to factor the media hyperbole. |
