I fear that the "big thing" is very near at Merapi. A mega eruption like the one at Krakatoa in last century, could cause serious troubles not only for Indonesians but for the rest of the world as well. Pacific ring of fire is extremely active since last year.

I was just about to comment that I have big concerns that once this baby blows, it will only be the beginning. Even if there are no immediate changes re: other volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, etc along the "ring," the climate will most definitely go through changes.

Right, I was exactly thinking on the same thing Bookchick. A "volcanic winter" that would follow a huge eruption could cause many troubles related to the climate. We have already had serious problems with the atmospheric events and "weird weather" conditions for a couple of years.

Very worrying.
