This works EQUALLY well in reverse. (And I don't really consider myself a true conservative). It takes at LEAST as much to shake and shock nutjob, hatefilled leftists out of their cemented, immovable, (as well as filthy and rude) mind ruts.
I see NO LESS habitual thinking in the "progressive" world.
These terms are incorrectly being used to refer to the state of mind of people. Just as often, just as many "conservatives" will use progressive and creative thought to restore well proven ideals being destroyed by firmly rooted,immovable,tunnel-visioned "progressives."

was a weak attempt at a double meaning, I thought it fitted in an abstract sense, but would be seen in the political sense. The term rut was too vague.
While I have doubts about the integrity of politicians, I have no doubt that is the way it has been, the way it is, the way it will be. That there will be a leaders who will pull them back into line. The article concerned habitual thinking, which is part of everyone's daily lives. An example used is the way when someone offers their right hand, it can be habitual to return the gesture. 'if something looks too good to be true it probably is' is still true for too many people, when if they managed to think twice about an offer, they would reconsider. The net can enable instant purchase before there is time to think once.
I used the term 'rut' from personal experience, and was used to describe a condition where I had tunnel vision, could see no point in changing, saw no prospects for improvement. I was quite happy to settle for the devil I knew even if it killed me. This was irrational. I needed the perspective of another person to start thinking again rather than acting in a way that was almost automatic. I didn't understand how limited my thinking was until seeing it in retrospect. I have seen and been with other people who have had the same problem. I have been with many more that have not.
Con-men target habits we are comfortable with. People are now comfortable about things that once would have been harmless, and feeling safer because they are being comforted by advertising.
I have a habit of making generalizations too broad or too narrow for the sake of space when detail is needed. I no doubt suffer from a degree of tunnel vision, but I'm not prepared to believe that the tunnel shows all there is to see.
