This is pretty scary, actually. Almost as if "they" who have the money and power to ride anything through are counting on the grassroots to suffer, then suffer so much that people steal to stay alive (New Orleans) and ultimately just have a species extinction, leaving just enough grass roots to work/serve/slave for sub-minimum wage, a sharecropper life, in service to the Masters.
