Lobbying groups like the National Association of Manufacturers, headquartered in Washington, have fought tooth and nail for decades against any restrictions on the highly profitable production of disposable containers and packaging. And at the other end of the equation, the equally powerful waste-management companies (a multi-billion-dollar industry) work on the simple premise that more trash equals more cash.

That's about 40 sq miles, which is less than .00001% of the US landmass. It would take 6000 years to cover 1% of the US landmass, and in 6000 years all the previous garbage would certainly have EASILY deteriorated.

Regarding the environment..cleaner than any time in the past 100 years.
Regarding the resources, practically endless. Unless, of course, you are talking about something like a Panda Bear, which has no use. Forests-more than ever. No shortage of corn, sugar, beans, rice, pigs, cows, chickens, etc...

Now, if you want to make a case regarding the trashy ways some states, communities, and localities handle themselves, then the easily resolution is to do something in your community....

I don't know. I have heard that most of our rivers are pretty polluted. We also dump alot of garbage in the sea and export considerable amounts to 3rd world countries. Toxic waste does not "deteriorate". And if we have so much land mass to spare, why do we build in places like Love Canal?

The "US" has no shortage of the things you mentioned, but lots of other countries DO. Much of it due to transnational exploitation.

The truth is: every country in the world is fast becoming a toxic dump. As usual, whatever happens in US becomes known to the world due to their free media and we don't even know half the story of what is happening in the rest of the world, esp in the muslim and developing countries...

Are you serious, willhelm, or are you just trying to cause some controversy?

LOL, mugofcoffee. That may be so to some extent, but the media in America is free....free to say anything they want...or NOT to say the truth. Trusting the American media is kind of like trusting your sensory perception to guess the exact outside temperature.

The population of the world could fit on the American coastline.

I have heard that most of our rivers are pretty polluted.
I agree with you there. We definitely need to do something about that.

In my county, we've had a major budget shortfall, primarily due to having to deal with the fact that our landfill has filled up much more quickly than was planned. This has resulted in early closure of our libraries, greater unemployment due to discontinuing public projects and maintenance requiring construction and building supplies as well as lay-off of 25% of county and related personnel, and costs to businesses who no longer have said laid-off personnel to sell goods and services to.
Also, many NGO services who received county-funded grants (such as our low-income medical clinic, Mountain Projects (who help poor people with their rent, heating oil and child care and provide our only publ...
