JimEspo says: Hello everyone! I just joined yesterday and wanted to say that already I think this is a GREAT site. I've only been a part of another so-called Web 2.0 bookmarking site -- this is by far superior in all ways. It's clean, user friendly, community driven with real-time results! I've already made it my home page. I do have a few questions, so if anyone would like to help me (and other new members) assimilate into this new community, please POP and post a comment. Here goes: a. I do not notice any advertising. How do they pay for this site? b. What does the gold star in the POP box at the end of the story mean? c. Do you find the auto-posting to technorati, digg, etc. helpful? How do you use it? d. Are there many bloggers here? I've always wanted to start one. e. I've noticed some posts are in other languages - cool! Any way to translate those posts? f. How does the community react to NEWS posts? g. Any tips/advice/guidelines on making the most of this community ex P.S. Just want to say I look forward to "clipping and popping" with you all! Hey JimEspo, welcome to Clipmarks. b. I think the star means the clip has got at least a certain amount of pops (votes) in a specifc amount of time and is therefore "hot" news d. There are a few, I am not one of them. I think of this as blogging-lite. e. Not that I know of. f. News posts are fine. g. Just the usual guidelines for any online forum. Try to use reasoned arguments, avoid the temptation to indulge in flames/personal attacks, don't feel compelled to respond to flames/personal attacks directed at you, etc. Above all, have fun. Thanks jklugman! My advice, excluding this, is to not take any. Be yourself. Unless, of course, being yourself inlcudes the use of smileys. There are several good translators. Do a search. Good advice. Thanks Godfrey Daniel! ==================== Any one have the answers to questions (a) or (c)? "A" can only be aswered by someone at Big Clip, and I think it's an if they told you they'd probably have to kill you situation. No comment on "c" because I don't use it. Welcome to clipmarks JimEspo. I've been wondering about the company's business model too. I don't want all the content I've put up to disappear suddenly. I realize all my babbling is probably only interesting to me, but, still. ....... I occasionally auto-post to del.icio.us. I like having the option to use the feature, but in most cases, I like to manually post sites to del.icio.us because I have a different tagging scheme on there. Thank you -- bignosemousie, enbar, and bunnicula and thanks again Godfrey Daniel. I've Used this site once or twice, I like it too! Welcome ClipMate! Nice to meet you skwirlinator -- thank you. hey welcome to clipmarks jimespo! can't wait to see what you find out there on the web. Thanks Clipette! This is fun. Welcome Jim. Nice introduction, glad to have you aboard. My only advice on fitting into the community is... don't start accusing everyone of being rapists (Kind of an inside joke). and otherwise abusing your fellow clippers in the extreme. Anyway, see you around the clipverse. BitDrifter: Thanks for the welcome and the advice -- which I'm sure I'll understand one day. Hi JimEspo, a- It's a mystery, let's keeep it that way as long as we can d- Clipmarks is the best community blog + chat + listserv + everything you want it to be, in fact, it is a new concept altogether, just one example: after few days, you won't like to use your email at all for anything and you'll be addicted to this site, so be careful for what you get for free here e- People from all over the world are showing up and clipping whatever they want. g- take GD's first advise on this. Thanks Arifsali for the advice. I appreciate a good mystery, especially this one. I think I'm already addicted - 20 plus stories in 24 hours! See you around! Welcome JimEspo! The addiction begins.... a. Apparently the guys atBig Clip get 25cents for product placement...hahahaa...that's what Eric said about the Starbucks cup.... d.Some blogs not but too many...I'd rather have my own site but still working on it... f. I go here for all the news I need...it's better than the paper since there's so much variety g.Bask in your newfound addiction...er, uh, hobby I mean... Welcome JimEspo! I have to warn you: This is a real addiction; serious. Soon you'll find yourself clipping, reading others' clips, popping, commenting for long hours (well, except when you eat, sleep etc.) and at one tab of your browsers, clipmarks will always be open. At least once every 10 minutes you'll check for it to see if new clips were posted. Well, OK, I'm a bit exaggerating. Let's just say, you'll probably like clipping very much. At one time, you'll notice that you desperately wanted to clip that news story you just saw on evening news at tv, or that story your friend just told you. Your right hand will instinctively search for a mouse around, while you instantly begin thinki... Amen! Well said, Invictus. coconutshell and invictus: Thanks for the greetings! I've already got the tab always open. My email chimes every time someone leaves a comment. I don't know which to look at first: comments, pops, etc. And I realize it's late night and weekend... what will it be like during the week. I won't ever "bad mouth" another site -- but this one seems alot more conducive to my personality -- very welcoming and non-competitive. I'm getting the hang of it and enjoying every pop! Soon I'll be popping and commenting on other clips. Baby steps. I use gmail and I have every comment ever made on my clips. I go back and read just the comments sometimes because its so entertaining. One of the things you will find is that your clips get buried fairly quickly especially if you clip at the hours I do. (2am-5am) I love weekends because I get to have some very interesting discussions. Have you ever been to www.fark.com? At least once every 10 minutes you'll check for it to see if new clips were posted.I've said goodbye to work productivity a long time ago Welcome to Clipmarks! I go to Madville.com as well...miss out checking eithe fark or madville for a day, a gajillion headlines missed... Oh, don't I know! I just recently joined fark for free. I havent even made a comment yet. Oh yea. Its one of my open firefox pages, Right after clipmarks One of the things you will find is that your clips get buried fairly quickly especially if you clip at the hours I do. (2am-5am)@skwirlinator - now your earlier comment makes sense (your 2-5am is just about the time my working day starts so I'll contribute to your clips alive). @jimespo - Welcome to cliipmarks - you could always put your twopenneth in to this debate welcome JimEspo! i'll tackle a and b...the rest seem to have been covered above. a. still a mystery to me. one day we'll work it out. i take inspiration from google. they created an awesome service and worried about monetizing later. and, most importantly, they figured out a way to do it that did not take away from the user experience at all. hopefully we can do the same one day. we just haven't had the time to think about it doing it RIGHT, so we haven't done it at all. b. the gold star is displayed for any clip that is currently popular on the site. we use it as a way to let people know which clips are getting the most buzz (pops) at any time. CoconutShell, attention! This was what I got from my AV software when I tried to browse madville.com: The Web site that you are trying to access has been blocked following the configurations set for the Web Site Filter. haraya, egoldstein, ghiberti -- thanks for the welcome! This is really cool. egoldstein -- honored to have you welcome me and comment on my clip. appreciate the information. because you are putting the users first you deserve to make lots of money. thank you.
