Hello everyone! I just joined yesterday and wanted to say that already I think this is a GREAT site. I've only been a part of another so-called Web 2.0 bookmarking site -- this is by far superior in all ways. It's clean, user friendly, community driven with real-time results! I've already made it my home page.

I do have a few questions, so if anyone would like to help me (and other new members) assimilate into this new community, please POP and post a comment. Here goes:

a. I do not notice any advertising. How do they pay for this site?
b. What does the gold star in the POP box at the end of the story mean?
c. Do you find the auto-posting to technorati, digg, etc. helpful? How do you use it?
d. Are there many bloggers here? I've always wanted to start one.
e. I've noticed some posts are in other languages - cool! Any way to translate those posts?
f. How does the community react to NEWS posts?
g. Any tips/advice/guidelines on making the most of this community ex

b. I think the star means the clip has got at least a certain amount of pops (votes) in a specifc amount of time and is therefore "hot" news
d. There are a few, I am not one of them. I think of this as blogging-lite.
e. Not that I know of.
f. News posts are fine.
g. Just the usual guidelines for any online forum. Try to use reasoned arguments, avoid the temptation to indulge in flames/personal attacks, don't feel compelled to respond to flames/personal attacks directed at you, etc. Above all, have fun.

My advice, excluding this, is to not take any. Be yourself. Unless, of course, being yourself inlcudes the use of smileys.

"A" can only be aswered by someone at Big Clip, and I think it's an if they told you they'd probably have to kill you situation. No comment on "c" because I don't use it.

I've been wondering about the company's business model too. I don't want all the content I've put up to disappear suddenly. I realize all my babbling is probably only interesting to me, but, still. .......

I occasionally auto-post to del.icio.us. I like having the option to use the feature, but in most cases, I like to manually post sites to del.icio.us because I have a different tagging scheme on there.

a- It's a mystery, let's keeep it that way as long as we can
d- Clipmarks is the best community blog + chat + listserv + everything you want it to be, in fact, it is a new concept altogether, just one example: after few days, you won't like to use your email at all for anything and you'll be addicted to this site, so be careful for what you get for free here
e- People from all over the world are showing up and clipping whatever they want.
g- take GD's first advise on this.

My email chimes every time someone leaves a comment. I don't know which to look at first: comments, pops, etc. And I realize it's late night and weekend... what will it be like during the week. I won't ever "bad mouth" another site -- but this one seems alot more conducive to my personality -- very welcoming and non-competitive.

I'm getting the hang of it and enjoying every pop! Soon I'll be popping and commenting on other clips. Baby steps.

I use gmail and I have every comment ever made on my clips. I go back and read just the comments sometimes because its so entertaining.

I love weekends because I get to have some very interesting discussions.

At least once every 10 minutes you'll check for it to see if new clips were posted.

welcome JimEspo! i'll tackle a and b...the rest seem to have been covered above.

a. still a mystery to me. one day we'll work it out. i take inspiration from google. they created an awesome service and worried about monetizing later. and, most importantly, they figured out a way to do it that did not take away from the user experience at all. hopefully we can do the same one day. we just haven't had the time to think about it doing it RIGHT, so we haven't done it at all.

b. the gold star is displayed for any clip that is currently popular on the site. we use it as a way to let people know which clips are getting the most buzz (pops) at any time.
