bignosemousie says: I applaud this man. I think he hits the nail on the head when he said that mistakes breed mistakes. I realize that a language is an evolving entity, but it still irks me when a word gets added to the dictionary (thus legitimizing it) because it becomes overused incorrectly. Makes me wonder if "public" typos are a reflection of our public education. Some of Jeff's friends live nearby me in Boston. I heard them chatting outside about this the other day. Not sure if the source page gave out his website: http://www.jeffdeck.com/teal/. @Lara - public typos are a reflection of being human; we all make mistakes - that's quite okay. Alan, I agree that to err is human. A mistake is a mistake. I make them all the time. However, when people misspell or have poor grammar because they do not know the proper way, or don't care, it's a shame. overusedHey, that's not in my dictionary. In my Webster's New World College Dictionary, the word miniscule is defined as the erroneous spelling of minuscule. Isn't that something when spelling mistakes have their own definition inserted. In speaking what bothers me is the pronounciation of some words like axe instead of ask, and ekcetra instead of etcetera. Punctuation, spelling and pronounciation all go hand in hand for proper speech. I think it's time teachers started doing their job. ''Eats, shoots and leaves''by Lynne Truss Great read. Mickfinn, I really love that book. Good read, indeed. Took this pic with my phone of the guy's handiwork on the Green Line a while ago: "Do not lean against (the) doors" I can't stand the suspense! If "strawberry's" is wrong, then what is correct?! |
