The lighter rock that once surrounded the dense <A href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_neck">volcanic neck</A> has now eroded away, leaving the dramatic tower. High <A href="http://www.twanight.org/newTWAN/photos.asp?ID=3002054">above</A>, the central band of the Milky Way galaxy arches across the sky.
