first. But what if one's sole objective is to learn French, for example?

<BR /><DIV>Richard: In either case, I wouldn't study Latin first. To learn several languages, I'd study
etymology, which focuses on the historical development of word forms as they're transmitted from
one language to another. This targets the most useful aspects of studying Latin and covers other
languages, such as Greek. Studying etymology helps one's understanding of English, too.
