My Googlegänger and I maintain a fairly low profile on the Internet.

I feel sorry for people with famous and infamous Googlegängers, though. I guess it does provide a bit of privacy, via the sheer volume of results a person would have to sift through to find the one they were seeking.

I've met my googleganer. We actually met around 1995, so it was in the very early days of the internet. He came to see Jesus Christ Superstar at RPI young actors guild, and was very surprised to find himself on the playbill (I was playing Pontius Pilate)

Since then, we've quietly competed to be the authoritative "Eric Skiff" on the web. We both got married in 2005, which definitely caused a little wishlist confusion, and for a while his wedding pictures were the top result for our name.

Unfortunately for the other Eric, the last few years have changed that... Blogging, podcasting, barcamps, podcamps, and working at clipmarks did a bit to help my google rank.

Does that make me the other E...

interesting point, so google rank determines who is the "One" and who is the googleganger..

Hehe - how funny would that be if it was really all just one guy here who puts on different "names" when he's the CEO, a developer, a community guy, etc.

In reality, though, there's 3 Erics here at the Clipmarks office in NYC. Eric Weitner goes as "W" and I'm generally known as "Skiff" in the office to keep the confusion down. For a while after I started, if someone said "Eric" in the hallway, I'd pop my head out of my office.

decided to look up the meaning of eric:
The name Eric is of Scandinavian origin. It is derived from the name Eiríkr, meaning "complete ruler" or "ever ruler" from the words aiza, "honor", or ei "ever" and ríkr,"ruler" in Old Norse. The most common historical form is Erik.

Very interesting, tidbit2 - I'd heard something like "great warrior" before, but the explanation for ei (ever) rikr (ruler) is fascinating. Thanks!
