Bonine says that for maximum effect, black plants require contrast in the garden. "Gold-leaf plants work really well - or a backdrop like a light stone wall. They're especially good in containers mixed with other textures and colors."

While some of the plants may be available at your local nursery, Bonine suggests seeking out a specialty nursery for the more obscure varieties.
