Indeed. Many are unaware that the corn grown all across the midwest is inedible - corn prices don't affect starvation much, because people couldn't eat it. 20% or so goes to ethanol, 30% or so to the ubiquitous corn sweeteners, and half is fed to cattle. Our hybrid of corn is bred to be large in the endosperm, and tiny in the germ. Thus it has little protein, makes good ethanol, and makes cattle fat very fast. Grass-fed cattle take years to reach market weight, corn-fed, only months. But the corn-fed steak may have 9 or 10 grams of sat. fat; the grass-fed, 1 or 2. Because it tastes good? |
