European governments tried to chart a democratic course between the Depression era failings of laissez-faire capitalism and the autocratic urges of Soviet socialism
I wish the American government had come to the same conclusions as the European governments.

It is our loss as Americans that we go into debt to get educated or get health care and live on an eternal war footing.

Dulios,
when I clipped this I had 2 socially minded clippers particularly in mind - both female! You of course are one. Masbury will always fly the flag for the males.

One makes the elite weather. The others enrich the masses only. Turkeys and Christmas come to mind.

Dyslexic attack. Should read ...

One makes the elite wealthier. The others enrich the masses only. Turkeys and Christmas come to mind.

Thanks for thinking of me!

There are many unique things about the American character, not the least of which is individualism.

Individualism is not a bad thing. Our Founding Fathers declared that "all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights."

A noble and revolutionary idea, even if in practice we still haven't totally achieved it. (At the time, of course, only white, land-owning males could vote; women, blacks, and Indians were not counted as "men", and therefore had no rights, inalienable or not.)

But too many...

Not that long ago since one white male was worth 20, 30 times more than another white man at the polling box. Then all about property. Now it's wealth. Everything has been conceded grudgingly but always retaining the edge.

The nearest to an ideal is the Swiss where all vote on important issues. Equally. When the electronic age allows home voting then we can eliminate politicians from the need to make laws!!! Will we ever see the day?
