Some of the best Science fiction doesn't stray too far from the principles of science, it just puts them in strange places and gives them a twist. We didn't know how a Warp engine worked, but if you were going faster than light it would be just what they need. One of the selling points for Star Trek was the idea that it was a "Western" in space, with a whole lot more room to deal with. Science Fiction writers, can take great pains to ensure that their work does not contradict known scientific knowledge. It's a good way to become familiar with science.
