syncopath says:
1. the above quote is graven on Kazantzakis tombstone

2. " They think of me as a scholar, an intellectual, a pen-pusher.
And I am none of them.
When I write, my fingers
get covered not in ink, but in blood.
I think I am nothing more than this:
an undaunted soul. "

Words Nikos Kazantzakis
used to describe himself in 1950.

Desire is to want things that one does not posses now.
Fear is to be afraid of losing what one already possesses.

NK's words cover both.

Hence the absence of desire and fear can set one free.

That is how I interpret NK's saying.
