Mathew 7:12-23 KJV
12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

You're not required to be tolerant; you choose to be or not. And I've never really liked the "tolerant" label. I prefer "accepting." The first one sounds like you're being forced. The second one says you've made an informed decision, and chosen to accept a belief exists even if you personally disagree.

Accepting that other beliefs exist, and that folks have the right to practice theirs is one of the great underlying tenets of this country. However most people who speak of tolerance mean some sort of morphing of all beliefs together to the point that almost anything goes - which is absurd! I believe as I do because I think it's the only way, and while I won't force this on anyone, neither will I compromise to accomodate something I don't believe. I just have to wonder at any so-called belief system that changes with the direction of the wind.

Agreed. That's why I prefer "acceptance" over "tolerance." I can accept you have different views, with which I may or may not agree. But I don't have to tolerate any bad behavior that arises from said beliefs.
