To be fair, I'd guess that many of these science teachers who feel a need to inject their mythology into the discussion are not specifically trained in science. Many eons ago when I was in school it was common practice for say, the PE coach, to double as the science teacher also. Not to say that I think this is the best way to handle this, merely that this was at that time the reality and I wonder if that practice still exists. Many theists I've spoken with try to conflate science and religion because both are explanatory disciplines. That, of course, is where the similarity ends. To stretch an analogy, religion starts and ends out with a map chiseled in stone while science is the map maker, armed with a transit and curiosity, never knowing what lies around the next bend. Static versus dynamic. By equating the two, theists pander to people's desire for stability. Of course, since they are forced to follow an outdated and largely inaccurate map, they must offer experts to interpret what the map really means.
